Animals: Machines in Motion

The Museum of Science is an amazing place in Boston that houses hands-on exhibits, live animals, digital models, and movies about science and it’s history. The museum’s exhibits, live shows, and movies are intriguing and every time I go there, I learn things I never knew of before. It is an enormous building, and on every floor there is something new. I interviewed many students in Wood Hill about their experiences going to the Museum of Science. One person we interviewed said: “You know what I really like about going there? The creative things-like the sliding cars."

The Museum of Science is opening a new exhibit, called Animals: Machines in Motion that delves into how animals evolved to survive in their unique environments.The exhibit will open on February 14, 2016. It will be based on the  different ways animals have developed to run, fly, jump, slither, and eat. This temporary exhibit will include digital and hands-on activities, models, and real specimens. It will also feature a life-sized cast of T-rex Sue, the largest and most complex T-rex ever. This incredible exhibit will be free with exhibit hall admission. When I asked the students I interviewed about whether they would like to go there, all of them said that they would definitely go there. As Zach Clement from 7 East said, “... This experience would be very beneficial to students in this era.”

Teacher Feature: Ms.Elliot

This week’s teacher feature is on Ms. Elliott, the new orchestra teacher! She has a 19 year old cat named Chubbers (that was named by her sister) and Ms. Elliott was in school, she loved music (of course) and history. If she wasn’t a teacher, she would be a full time musician. Her favorite part of teaching is when a student gets a concept for the first time and sharing her passion, music, with her students. During her spare time, Ms. Elliott enjoys running and, in fact, she ran her first half-marathon this year! Her favorite movie is Singin' in the rain and she loves watching TV. Pride and Prejudice is her favorite book. Ms. Elliott has been teaching orchestra for a year, but it’s her first full time job. So far, she loves Wood Hill and thinks it’s an awesome place to learn. As for her favorite song the orchestra is playing, she likes the song Simple Gifts because it is a beautiful yet simple arrangement. If you have any questions about the orchestra, make sure to ask her in the hall!

Stargirl Hits the Stage

The 6th grade is making a movie based of the book “Stargirl” by Jerry Spinelli. The 6th grade has just finished filming a few great scenes. You may know these scenes as the “game changer scenes”: “The Football Scene” (the scene where stargirl becomes popular) and “The Basketball Scene” (the scene where stargirl becomes unpopular). The scenes look great. Another great aspect, is that the two teams are collaborating to make this movie and they are doing a wonderful job. Can’t wait to see the finished product!

Keep It Wild, Hot, and GORGEOUS

Have you ever wanted to star in a fashion show? Do you love dressing up? Do you want to look gorgeous in full make-up and beautiful, homemade gowns? Do you want to use a sewing machine to create fantastic clothes to have them shone off to an audience? Well, you can at the newly constructed Cormier Youth Center behind Doherty Middle School. Andover Youth Services is offering a new activity to please many students-- Fashion Club Open Studio. It’s taught by one of the workers for the Center and a girl in high school who can work wonders with a sewing machine. They both are there to help you and get your feet wet with the magic of sewing.

The theme is called “New Beginnings” meaning you can create whatever you’re comfortable with. Want to create new up-and-coming fashion or movie star looks? Sure! Want to create animals? Christmas in July in June? Go ahead! “New Beginnings” can be interpreted into whatever you like!

This group activity meets Wednesdays after school from 2:30-5 p.m. If you want to join, don’t be afraid. If you think you’ll be the one of the only Woodchuck, Hillian, or Wood Hill-billy there, don’t worry! During the last session there were four students from Wood Hill at the open studio. Boys, who cares if you want to come and model or even design clothes? This is a judgement free zone! Be sure to check ays.recdesk.com for the details and to sign up. Fashio Club Open Studio rolls out the runway for all to see the designs in June, date to be determined.

Other programs available are:

• Cooking with Tony: Full Course Meal- Learn what it takes to plan, shop for, and prepare a full meal with Tony
• Girls: Venture Out- Try a new activity for only girls! It includes DIY Day, Shop + Skate, Jewelry making, and Snow Tubing.
• Free Running- Feel free to run around the CYC and have fun practicing parkour and challenging others to do cool moves!
• The Sweet Life- One of AYS’s most populars, and each week you get to make sweet treats!
• Open Gym 7th and 8th Grade- Open gym for the seventh and eighth grades!
• Middle School Basketball 7th and 8th Grade- Pickup basketball for everybody in seventh or eighth grade!
• 6th Grade Spectacular- As long as you’re in 6th grade you can come to the Youth Center to use the gym, lobby, and Phillips Room to play whatever!
